Students Can Build Brain Power with Exercise
TEAM E3 provides a frame around the integration of regular sessions of 10-15 minutes (or more) of aerobic exercise during the learning day. Phillip Tomporowski, professor of exercise science at the University of Georgia was part of a study published in the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (200). They found that the bigger the dose of exercise the more it can pay off in academic achievement. In times of reduced PE classes, less budget for exercise and ever more out of school "seat time," this is compelling information.
Tomporowski and his team found that children aged 7-11 who exercised for 40 minutes daily after school had greater academic improvement than same-aged kids who worked out for just 20 minutes. This aligns with findings by Charles Hillman, associate professor of kinesiology and neurosc at the University of Illinois. Exercise may have even more impact on children. The brain's frontal lobe, thought to play a role in cognitive control, keeps growing throughout the school years "Exercise could ramp up the development of a child's brain, " he says.
Hillman tested the idea that bouts of exercise could improve academic performance in an area in which all teachers work very hard - test scores. Hillman found that kids had more accurate responses on standardized tests when they d after moderate exercise, posed to being tested after 20 minutes of sitting still. His results lend support to the idea that single bout of exercise before a class helps boost kids' learning skills and attention span.
