How Far to the
Capitol?
This activity ties in with Race to the Capitol. Once students realize how far it is to their state capitol, unless your school is in the same town, they may decide to collect FootGaming miles as a team.
Using Google Earth your students can do a lot more than just calculate the distance from your school to the governor's mansion in the capitol city of your state. Once they start planning adventures you will be sure to come up with plenty of great ideas of your own. Students of all ages are drawn to the coazy personality of a Chuzzle. You will be surprised how hard students will work for a 10-minute turn at Footgaming Chuzzle, especially those most challenged by focus, productivity, reading and even behavior.
You can change
the Fly-To speed settings, from the Tools
menu>Options>Touring. Reduce the speed as much as you
like using the slider. Now with a much slower zoom you all can
reflect on what you are seeing.
- Plan a trip with the class to the current Governor's mansion.
- Have the students research and find the address
- Get driving directions, then click play
- Everyone gets to take the virtual drive, watching the scenery and interesting stops along the way
- Great fodder for discussion
Why not navigate to the capitol in Google Earth, add layers of information and conduct some research in 3D. Try these layers of info:
- Wikipedia
- Panoramio
- GE community information
- 3D Buildings
